The Lord’s church is referred to as the church of Christ (Romans 16:16), because Christ built it and He called it His own, when He said, "Upon this rock I will build My church" (Matthew 16:18). Christ "gave Himself for her" (Ephesians 5:25), the church, "which He purchased with His own blood" (Acts 20:28). Christ is the "head over all things to the church, which is His body" (Ephesians 1:22-23), of which there is only "one body" (Ephesians 4:4). There is only one body and this one body is the Lord’s one true church. Christ only has one church that He has promised to save, since "He is the saviour of the body" (Ephesians 5:23). People in the many denominational churches will be lost since they have no promise of salvation from the Lord. They are not in the Lord's one church, the one body He is going to save.
We read in Acts 2:47, "The Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved." The Lord only adds the saved to His one church. But who are the saved? Jesus says, "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16:16). The vast majority of the denominations say that baptism is not necessary to be saved, but Jesus say that it is necessary. It is when one is baptized that one is saved and "baptized into one body" (1 Corinthians 12:13), the church of Christ.
Who The Church of Christ Is
The churches of Christ are not a denomination. They are neither Protestant, Catholic, or Jew. They are comprised of individuals born again through obedience to the commands of Christ (John 3:1-5; I Peter 1:22-25). The church of Christ is the church Jesus said he would build (Matthew 16:18), coming into existence on the day of Pentecost after Jesus’ death and resurrection (Acts 2). Christ is the head of his church (Ephesians 1:21-23; Colossians 1:18). Therefore, a local congregation is properly called a church of Christ (Romans 16:16). The worship of the congregation is conducted according to the teachings in the Scriptures.
We have no desire to be popular in the eyes of men. Our purpose is to preach the gospel of Christ without any change. We offer the Bible as it is. We are not a welfare agency or a source of entertainment. We do not offer cakes, coffee, or doughnuts. We don’t sell products or operate a business. We are not involved in politics or social movements. Our desire is for the church to function as a church – to do the things the church was designed to do, that is, to provide for the spiritual welfare of mankind. It is the gospel of Christ which is able to save men’s souls (Romans 1:16; James 1:21).
The churches of Christ are different, but not different solely for the sake of being different. The difference comes from the doctrines upon which it stands. It is not governed by creeds of men, councils, or synods. The New Testament is complete and our only authority for directing every act of work and worship.
The church of Christ in this community is autonomous. It is not a branch or a part of any other organization. Its head is Christ who governs with all authority (Matthew 28:18). Elders oversee the flock (I Peter 5:1-4), deacons serve the church (Philippians 1:1; Acts 6:1-6), preachers teach the gospel to those without and within the church (II Timothy 4:1-5), teachers give instruction in the Bible (James 3:1), and members serve as their individual talents allow them (Romans 12:4-8).
